Poland, South Korea ink defense agreement for missile production

(MENAFN) Poland has finalized a major defense cooperation agreement with South Korea valued at about €3.3 billion, or roughly $3.8 billion, focused on the joint production of medium-range precision-guided missiles.

The deal was concluded on Monday between Poland’s Armament Agency and a partnership involving a leading South Korean defense company alongside Poland’s WB Group, according to reports. The agreement предусматривает the manufacture of more than 10,000 CGR-080 missiles intended for Poland’s Homar-K rocket launcher systems.

As part of the arrangement, a new joint production plant will be set up in the northwestern Polish city of Gorzow Wielkopolski, establishing local manufacturing capacity for the missiles.

Deliveries under the contract are planned to occur over a three-year period from 2030 through 2033.

The missiles will be deployed with the Homar-K launcher, a system adapted by Poland from South Korea’s K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher and mounted on military vehicles produced domestically by Jelcz.

Poland’s defense minister described the agreement as a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s defense autonomy, highlighting that the inclusion of technology transfer, licensing, and domestic production would enable Polish specialists to directly participate in building advanced weapons systems. “Manufacturing independence is now becoming a reality,” he said.

High-level defense officials from Poland and a special representative of the South Korean president were present at the signing ceremony. The defense minister also noted that both countries intend for the Gorzow Wielkopolski facility to develop into a regional hub for the sale of Chunmoo-compatible rocket munitions, potentially supplying other European states.

This agreement represents the third major arms-related partnership between Warsaw and Seoul in recent years. Previous contracts signed in 2022 and 2024 included Poland’s acquisition of roughly 290 Homar-K launcher modules along with large quantities of medium- and long-range precision-guided missiles.
