Turkish, South Korea FMs hold talks in Ankara

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, on Wednesday in Ankara during Cho’s official working visit to Türkiye, according to a post by Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal. The post included photos from the meeting but offered no additional details.

The diplomatic relationship between Türkiye and South Korea dates back to 1949, when Türkiye formally recognized South Korea as an independent state. Official diplomatic ties were established in 1957. Türkiye was one of the first countries to send troops in support of South Korea during the Korean War in 1950, contributing nearly 23,000 soldiers over the course of the conflict and subsequent years.

In 2012, bilateral relations were elevated to a strategic partnership. During a visit to Türkiye last November, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung signed three agreements and issued a joint declaration on the strategic partnership between the two nations. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously visited South Korea in 2018.

Türkiye and South Korea maintain strong economic ties, with South Korea ranking as Türkiye’s second-largest trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region after China. Bilateral trade reached about $10.3 billion in 2024, and the two countries are connected through a Free Trade Agreement.
