South Korea's Ex-First Lady Handed Twenty Months Jail Sentence
The Seoul Central District Court issued the ruling while clearing Kim of separate accusations involving stock manipulation and violations of the Political Funds Act.
Prosecutors had demanded a 15-year prison sentence for Kim.
Kim faced indictment last month on allegations she accepted high-end gifts from business leaders in return for securing government positions and political endorsements.
According to prosecutors, Kim received presents valued at approximately 370 million won ($258,000), including a costly painting, to back a candidate pursuing the ruling People Power Party's nomination during last year's general elections.
Her husband, deposed President Yoon Suk Yeol, also received a prison sentence earlier this month—five years for obstructing investigators' attempts to detain him last year, including by ordering the Presidential Security Service to block the execution of a detention warrant at the official presidential residence.
That conviction represents the first judgment among eight criminal cases Yoon currently faces, including allegations he orchestrated an insurrection through his December 2024 declaration of martial law.
The dual convictions mark an unprecedented legal reckoning for South Korea's former presidential couple, with both now confronting significant prison time stemming from separate corruption and obstruction charges.
