South Korea Pushes Submarine Deal in Meeting with Canadian PM
Kang Hoon-sik, visiting Canada as a special envoy for strategic economic cooperation, delivered a personal letter from President Lee to Carney and met with senior Canadian officials to discuss the $41.4 billion submarine program, as well as broader security and defense industry collaboration.
The visit comes as a South Korean consortium, led by Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, has been shortlisted alongside Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as a final contender for the Canadian submarine project.
Kang also briefed Canadian officials on South Korea’s advanced submarine technology and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting deeper defense and security cooperation between the two countries.
Reports indicate that Ottawa and Seoul recently “signed a memorandum of understanding intended to bring South Korean auto sector manufacturing and investment to Canada.”
Canada’s Minister of State for Defense Procurement, Stephen Fuhr, is expected to visit South Korea next week to personally inspect a submarine currently operated by the South Korean Navy.
Kang highlighted that securing the Canadian contract would be a “major step forward” for South Korea’s defense industry, marking its largest defense deal in Western markets and potentially paving the way for expanded presence in NATO markets.
