Ex-South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee Gets Twenty-Month Jail Sentence
The Seoul Central District Court handed down the verdict, acquitting Kim of charges related to stock manipulation and violations of the Political Funds Act. Prosecutors had initially sought a 15-year prison term.
Last month, Kim was indicted on allegations of accepting luxury items from business figures in exchange for government positions and political nominations. Prosecutors claimed she received gifts valued at approximately 370 million won ($258,000), including an expensive painting, to support a candidate seeking the ruling People Power Party’s nomination in last year’s general elections.
Kim’s husband, the ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, was earlier sentenced to five years in prison for obstructing investigators’ attempts to detain him, including ordering the Presidential Security Service to block the execution of a detention warrant at the official residence.
The ruling marks the first of eight ongoing cases against Yoon, which include charges that he led an insurrection following his declaration of martial law in December 2024.
